I’m a huge fan of both garlic and broccoli, so today I bring to you a Chinese-inspired recipe for garlic broccoli! I like to top mine with sesame seeds and serve with some steamed white rice, but this is pretty versatile as either a super flavorful side dish or even as a main course.

Ingredients: (serves 4)

  • 2 heads of broccoli
  • 5 cloves of garlic
  • 1/2 cup of vegetable stock
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1/2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 tbsp + 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 4-5 green onions
  • sesame seeds for garnish
  • 1 tsp red pepper flakes

Start by cutting the broccoli florets off of the stalk and slice the stalk into bite-sized pieces. Mince your garlic. Thinly slice your green onions.

In a small bowl, combine your stock, garlic, soy sauce, brown sugar, cornstarch, and teaspoon of sesame oil. Heat the tablespoon of sesame oil in a wok or skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, add your broccoli pieces and cook for about 7-8 minutes, stirring constantly and adding a 1/3 cup of water to the pan about halfway through cooking. Turn down the heat a little bit and stir in your sauce, pepper flakes, and 3 of your green onions and cook for about 3 more minutes, or until the sauce is thicker and clings to the broccoli. Then, serve and top with sesame seeds, remaining green onion, and more pepper flakes, if desired.
