These are a great substitute for your normal grill out staples and take only 15 minutes to make! The recipe can be made vegan by using only vegetable oil and substituting the egg for 2 hours in the fridge.

  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 1/2 diced onion
  • 1/2 can of corn
  • 2 15-oz cans of black beans
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp cumin
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 2/3 tsp curry
  • Salt and pepper
  • Burger buns
  • Pickles, red onion, guacamole, cheddar cheese for toppings

  1. Start by draining (not rinsing) your black beans and mashing them until mostly broken up with a few whole beans remaining.
  2. Stir in the onion, corn, and garlic, along with the breadcrumbs.
  3. Mix in the egg until just combined.
  4. Add the spices to your mixture.
  5. Heat up either butter or cooking oil in a large frying pan.
  6. Shape your bean mixture into appropriately sized patties- they won’t shrink while cooking. Place each patty on the hot pan and cook for 5 minutes on each side, adding cheese to melt, if desired.
  7. (If your cheese isn’t melting, cover the pan with a lid for a few minutes.)
  8. Meanwhile, toast your buns either in the oven or on a greased griddle.
  9. Remove burgers from heat and assemble with the onions, guacamole, and pickles- yum!
